Migori Women's Regional Assembly

Mrs Asenath Oloo Asentah is a married woman with five children -  three daughters and two sons respectively and working with a Local Government Authority. She is a Christian woman participating in church activities and a leader of an organization within the church called Women Ministry.
Her interest in engaging herself with women issues made her think of founding a women group. Her seed of involvement in women issues begun in 1994 when she started a women group for friends called “Mond Pinje Women Group”.  The group is made up of 12 members and each caters for at least one unfortunate girl’s education - until they reach the form four level.  Asenath manages this group well, by being the Chairperson.  She gets assistance from her fellow members.
In her working place, Asenath is the current branch Union elected official. She has been in this post for three terms since her election.  She is also the treasurer of Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization Migori, Nyatike, Rongo and Uriri Districts.  Asenath supports education, and is a member of B.O.G Secondary Schools; namely Sori, BLTZA and Ungozo.  She is also a co-opted member of District Road Committee - D.R.C in Nyatike where she has engaged quite a number of women in road constructions.

In June 2006 Asenath was elected as a District Convener for Migori Women’s Regional Assembly.

The following are some of the Landmarks Asenath has made, courtesy of being the Migori Women’s Regional Assembly District Convener.

In February 2007 she rescued a form two drop out girl who had been forced into marriage by her father. The girl went back to school, scored C plus, and is now a Primary School Teacher.  The man was jailed for three years.

In March 2007 a standard seven pupil ran away from home after being canned by the father and as a result she sought refuge elsewhere and was married to a man who took advantage of the situation.   The pupil’s mother reported the case to Asenath and they informed the police who subsequently gave them transport - a Land Rover - which was accompanied by two policemen.
They traced the girl and found her in a room where she had been locked up for four days. The case was heard in court and the man was jailed and later put under probation.  Meanwhile, the girl did her KCPE and got a mean score of 320 marks and has now joined form one this year - 2010. The Migori Women’s Regional Assembly is monitoring this girl’s progress.

On 28th December 2009 Asenath visited Migori Women’s Prison where she contributed children’s clothes, sanitary towels, vaseline petroleum jelly, soaps & tissue. The prisoners were so appreciative and pleased with the Assembly’s surprise visit.

On the 1st of January 2010, Asenath celebrated New Year’s day with the women who had been affected by Post Election Violence in December 2007 – January 2008, in her home area - Migori. She also distributed blankets to them.
In Nyatike, Asenath is distributing beans, maize, clothes,
blankets and sanitary wear to IDPs who fled Naivasha during the post
election violence in early 2008Coordination
Being one of the Interim Committee Members, Asenath made sure that those who had been affected by Post Election Violence in Naivasha and were stranded got food, clothing and that they were transported to their homes.  (She used the money they had contributed as committee members).  In this operation, they had involved organizations like: Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organisation - MYWO, Kenya Red Cross, Seventh Day Adventist - SDA church and others. They had made a camp where the affected were first receiving treatment, a bath and food before identifying their homes, and then later on being transported there. The whole operation took a month.
