Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee for the Component Science and Mechanics Department located in Albuquerque, NM. This is a temporary, full-time position. This position does not currently require a security clearance. Department Description The Component Science and Mechanics Department conducts frontier mechanics research and science-based engineering solutions for component development and assessment. Focus areas for the department include interfacial and micro/nano-mechanics, probabilistic mechanics and uncertainty quantification, and mechanical aspects of component and subsystem reliability. Areas of active interest include: interconnects and encapsulation, fatigue and fracture, energy dissipation at contacts, micro-structural mechanics, shock and vibration, crack initiation and propagation, micro-scale diagnostics, and adaptive structures. Computational and physical simulations, including solid mechanics and structural dynamics for both linear and non-linear systems, are utilized in a dynamic multidisciplinary teaming environment. The Postdoctoral Appointee will contribute to new and existing research projects in the area of solid mechanics and structural dynamics. The research is evenly divided between numerical, analytical, and experimental work, and will involve the use of Finite Element Analysis codes and MATLAB, uncertainty quantification, and designing and using experimental test apparatuses for model validation studies. Additional duties could include support of senior staff members in model development and analysis of complex, electro-mechanical systems. The position will involve working with several staff members on a set of challenging problems with important applications. Postdoctoral Hiring Program The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval. Required • A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field • Ability to work independently on a research project • Strong technical writing • Strong oral communication skills, as evidenced by prior publications • Demonstrate competency in experimental practices • Knowledge of MATLAB, and experience with FEA software • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.5 Desired • Competency in machine design is preferred • GPAs above 3.5 for undergraduate and 3.7 cumulatively for graduate education are preferred.
