Kenyan MP’s Vote To Increase Their Pay Despite Protests Kenyan MP’s who are already the highest paid in the world on Tuesday voted unanimously to raise their salaries in defiance to proposals by Salaries Renumeration Commission to reduce their pay. The move opens a window for them to earn Ksh 851,000 in backdated monthly pay since March 28 this year when they were sworn in instead of the Ksh 532,500 that had been set for them by Salaries and Remuneration Commission. President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier asked the MP’s to accepts the pay cuts and advised them to put the country’s interests above their own. The lawmakers are already highly paid and their demands have stirred a heated debate among Kenyans with many cursing them and terming them as greedy. They have even nicknamed them ‘MPigs’ and they clearly demonstrated this with a demonstration ‘Occupy Parliament’ that saw activists and citizens slaughter pigs and cause a bloody mess in Parliament premises. The MP’s have since argued that the proposed salary cuts violated the law and that the President has no right to determine their salaries. Looks like this saga will go on for a long time because this move is expected to be challenged in court by various Civic Rights groups.
