Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Postdoctoral Appointee in Wave Energy Conversion Modeling and Testing for Sandia’s Water Power Technologies Department located in Albuquerque, NM. This is a temporary, full-time position that currently does not require a security clearance. Department Description The Sandia National Laboratories Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. Specific application areas of the department's work include Marine Hydrokinetic (MHK), Offshore Wind (OW), and Conventional Hydropower (CH). This department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include structural health and prognostics management, VAWT design and analysis, large offshore HAWT rotor design, and foundation scour. Conventional Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation. Primary Job Duties Sandia’s Water Power Technology Department is seeking a post-doctoral researcher for activities in wave energy conversion, with an emphasis on WEC modeling and testing. This position requires basic and applied research for WECs and the research will span both the theoretical and experimental. Expertise in experimentation, signal processing, engineering, and modeling are desired. Numerical projects may include developing power performance models for distinct device types, developing control techniques to alter device performance, developing anchor and mooring models, characterizing the deployment climate, or developing models to accurately handle multiple interacting bodies. Experimental projects may include design of models, test program development, signal processing, or performance model validation. Engineering projects may include device structural analysis and design, sub-system reliability calculations, or development of power conversion systems. The selected candidate must have the ability to contribute to a diverse research portfolio and also support execution of the program for our primary sponsor. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to actively publish and present her/his research at conferences and workshops and in technical journals. The selected candidate must also be able to interface with the other activities in the department related to wind and water power to assist in furthering the development a cross-cutting research portfolio. For instance, opportunities to contribute to development of floating offshore wind modeling tools may also be available. Post Doc Hiring Program The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management's discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Required • A Ph.D. in Physics, Mechanical/Ocean Engineering, or other applicable field • Strong analytical background: developing equations of motion, solving differential equations, applying statistical analyses, advanced understanding of wave equations, and general knowledge of energy conversion principles • Expertise and experience in one or several of the following: development of numerical models to represent dynamical systems, design and analysis of energy conversion systems, sensors and experimentation, model validation and signal processing, computer programming • Technical expertise in optimization and estimation of dynamical systems • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) as well as personal initiative, responsiveness, and attention to detail • Strong interest in performing basic and applied research with established track record of publishing work in various formats (technical reports, conference papers, journals, etc.) • Strong record of academic performance • Ability to work on numerous projects and react to quickly changing requirements • Domestic and occasional foreign travel required Desired • Experience in Renewable Energy technologies and an interest in WEC development • Knowledge of: floating bodies (statics and dynamics), fluid dynamics, ocean waves, design and analysis of offshore structures, and power take-off design • Experience with WEC modeling tools: Boundary Element Method codes (preferably WAMIT), anchor and mooring codes (preferably OrcaFlex), computational fluid dynamics codes (StarCCM+, CFX) • Experience with commercial FEA codes (preferably ANSYS) and 3-D CAD software (Solidworks preferred) • Technical expertise in dynamics and controls • Technical expertise in sensing including experimentation and real-time sensors for control and health monitoring applications • Experience with presenting technical papers at national and international conference To learn more about this position and to apply online, please visit our Careers page at http://www.sandia.gov/careers/search-openings.html, and reference Job Opening ID Number: 643434.
