Postdoctoral Positions in Epithelial and Stem Cell BiologyPostdoctoral Positions in Epithelial and Stem Cell Biology (New York University Medical School) Postdoctoral positions are available in Dr Henry Tung-Tien Sun's laboratory to study epithelial and stem cell biology. Major contributions from Dr Sun's laboratory include the establishment of keratins as intermediate filaments in epithelial cells, identification of corneal epithelial stem cells, identification of hair follicular epithelial stem cells (with G Costarelis and RM Lavker), and discovery of uroplakins, a group of membrane proteins that form natural 2D crystals (urothelial plaques) covering the apical surface of bladder epithelium. The lab is currently studying uroplakins and urothelial biology, and is well supported by NIH grants including a Program Project grant supporting a team of four laboratories (TT Sun, PhD, urothelial biology and stem cells; Gert Kreibich, PhD and Michael Rindler, PhD, membrane biogenesis; Xiangpeng Kong, PhD, atomic structure of membrane proteins; and Xue-Ru Wu, MD, urinary tract infection). Thus the group offers excellent exposure to multiple disciplines and collaborative opportunities that have led to the discovery that uroplakins play a key role in urothelial barrier function, the establishment of transgenic mouse models for studying bladder tumorigenesis, and the demonstration that uroplakins provide receptor for uropathogenic E. coli causing urinary tract infection. Postdoctoral positions are available in Dr Sun's laboratory to study epithelial membrane trafficking, and the identification and characterization of urothelial stem cells.
