The School of Marine Studies is an interdisciplinary School, integrating science (Marine Science Program) and social science (Marine Affairs Program). Key areas of the School include Marine Affairs, Sustaninable fisheries; Aquaculture; Coral reefs & marine biodiversity, Coastal management, Atolls and small islands and Oceanic societies. The SMS also works very closely with The Institute of Marine Resources (IMR) which provides scientific and technical skills, and capacity-building, in aquaculture, marine resource assessments, marine surveying, coral reef monitoring/ database maintenance, and socio-economic analysis for fisheries and aquaculture. The focus of IMR’s work is externally-funded research and consultancies on the region’s marine environment and its resources. For more information visit http://www.usp.ac.fj/index.php?id=4248/ The Opportunity The University is seeking an experienced and dynamic scholar to provide leadership in and to oversee the Marine Studies programmes. The Professor in Marine Studies will have a unique opportunity to shape the learning of current and future leaders of the Pacific Region. You will occasionally travel around the Pacific Islands to visit USP’s various campuses and have the prospect of acting in an advisory capacity to governments of Pacific countries and the many Non-Governmental Organisations and Projects in the Region. The appointee will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor through the Dean for the overall development and implementation of Marine Studies Programmes as a Centre of Excellence for the Region and internationally. The appointee will also be responsible for teaching, monitoring teaching in all marine studies programmes conducted at all levels, encouraging and monitoring research and publications; developing appropriate postgraduate and short-term intensive programmes in relevant areas. The Person We Seek: • A PhD in an area of marine science, preferably in the area of Fisheries • Experience in fisheries management will be a distinct advantage • An excellent record of teaching, research and publications • An excellent scholarly reputation in Marine Studies • Experience in managing a team of marine scientists, other marine related personnel, researchers, technicians and consultants • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Computer literacy Preference will be given to applicants with a track record of research and programme development and experience in distance learning and teaching. Knowledge relating to marine issues in the South Pacific or other island contexts will be advantageous. Remuneration The position is available for a term of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement. Salary Range: F$115,248 to F$124,592 per annum (Inclusive of 15% Gratuity) The University may pay an inducement allowance to secure the services of an exceptionally well qualified candidate. In addition to the above benefits, the University contributes 10% of basic salary to an approved superannuation scheme, provides airfare and relocation costs where appropriate.
