LS Research Associate I (REL1302.13The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans. PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Life Sciences Research Associate I to support the molecular investigation of the human-associated microbiota in health and disease, and the overall operations of the lab. The lab includes a 19-member, VA-based, Stanford-affiliated research group with undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants and research associates. This is a full-time, regular, exempt position. Duties: Conducting experiments in accordance with specific protocols; Creating and revising experimental protocols as needed; Recognizing and troubleshooting problematic experiments; DNA extraction and RNA isolation from clinical samples; PCR, including real-time quantitative PCR; Cloning; Microarray hybridization Preparing samples for sequencing (e.g. Sanger, 454, Illumina); Performing various molecular biological techniques as needed (in addition to those noted above); Documentation and basic interpretation of experimental results; Analyze sequence results by using software tools (e.g. Qiime, R, BLAST); Maintain the inventory of laboratory supplies, ensure general laboratory operation; Ensure compliance with governmental, health, and safety guidelines; Completing general laboratory chores as needed; Utilize strong communications skills to disseminate information from VA, Stanford and PI to lab. Requirements: Proficiency in general molecular biology techniques; Proficiency in written and spoken English; Skilled in using standard computer applications such as spreadsheets and databases, bioinformatics is a plus; Ability to understand study protocols, and to modify them as needed; Knowledge of scientific research methodology; Ability to interpret results from experiments, and to identify and troubleshoot problematic experiments when they occur; Ability to communicate effectively with more senior laboratory personnel regarding research-related issues, including those of experimental design and trouble-shooting; Ability to learn new laboratory techniques as needed; Good organizational skills and attention to detail; Ability to keep accurate records and to work in a dependable fashion; Experience with financial systems (Oracle or ReqLogic) is preferred; Previous laboratory organizational skills is desired; Familiarity with computer server management.
