Kenyan Software Developers Win Ericsson Competition Ericsson Competition Winners Kenyan teams Tokelezea and Easy Parking are the winners of this years Ericsson Apps for City Life competition. Each team consisted of five members who were each awarded an ASUS Transformer pad tablet. The teams have also qualified for Ericsson Application Global Awards where winners will take home 2.7 million shillings. Tokelezea is an app that normally helps people find events and cinema listings. Users can also find out what their friends are up to. The site was developed by Nick Hargreaves Onyango and Dennis Munene, enables users to search and also interact and share content around the places and events. Easy Parking on the other hand is a site that enables motorists to locate easy available parking. It involves using sensors installed in parking lots that show one free parking. It helps reduce time wastage in finding parking and fuel consumption. The app was developed by Thomas Kioko, Phoebe Mutua and Trevor Maingi. The rate of IT innovation in the country is very commendable. In the 2013 edition of the Ericsson Application Awards, one-third of the entries of the sub-Saharan contenders came from Kenya,” Robert Rudin, Ericsson Kenya managing director said while presenting the winners with the tablets. The “Apps for African City Life”’ competition is part of the global 2013 Ericsson Application Awards (EAA 2013), an ongoing annual competition for application developers worldwide that is organised by Ericsson. Tokelezea helps people locate what is happening around them and also events and places. It also helps users share experiences with friends, family and collegeaus.Teams participating were required to develop an application based on the Android platform that would address the theme, ‘Apps for African City Life’ which is designed to promote the development of innovative ideas and mobile applications to address situations particular to urban centres across the region.
